50MB limit testing

Chinh Pham called me just now and complained that I have interrupted his experiment by deleting his 40MB test file on marinecare.org.au.
He explained to me that he was doing a test to see what will happen if we go over the 50MB limit.

I still don't quite agree on this way of testing.
Can't we just ask vicnet what happens if we go over, and then ask if we can test that before doing so?

What if they suspend the site 3 days later and it takes them a week to get it unsuspended? (you know their speed of doing things!)
This can delay our whole project timeline!

Before doing these tests I strongly suggest that you should at least notify someone in the team, and discuss if possible.

Seeing that it is not OUR server, there are other people who are working on this server as well. I just think it is more appropriate to seek for an agreement before doing things like that.

just my 2c

Its nothing wrong to go over limit, Kevin. Its just like your ISP gives you 40Gb monthly and you downloaded more than that. It could happen to anyone, and similarly, so many websites are going over disk space limit, too.

I didnt ask Vicnet, because I reakon their support isnt helpful at all. And one more thing, I do believe in Computer Science, if you wanna build up your skill and knowledge fast, dont get help from somebody else unless you did try hard by yourself and couldnt solve the problem first.

Testing the site disk space is doable by ourselves. No extra charge, and in case the site gets suspended, I just ftp back to the server and delete those files.

I have done a number of things on the 3 websites, if I document and post in this blog everytime I make changes smt, sounds like Im spamming and very unprofessional practice.

The site should be left intact at this stage. All the changes should be done in the testing website, so it shouldnt be a problem if the site gets suspended for 1 week. I did think about this situation.

My 2.2 cents (gst included :p)

i didn't ask you to write an test plan before doing the test, i just want you to at least tell somebody.

and I don't need any nofitications for doing anything on YOUR websites. It's yours so I don't need to know anything about it.
However we demand notifications when anyone is doing anything on the marinecare.org.au website. I hope you can tell the difference.

btw, looking at the test that you have done, they did not suspend the website immediately.
i'm quite sure if they suspend it afterwards (say 1 say after we go over the limit), they won't unsuspend the site AS SOON AS you remove the files by ftp (say 1 day after you removed the files).
i'm just guessing it will take them 1 day but you can never tell. it can take a week may be.

we should talk to Vicnet about this issue, tell them if in case we exceed the storage page due to testing, just do not suspend the service because we need it, i believe they will understand and we can solve this problem quite easily, however, if someone want to do something with the marinecare.org.au, please put notification on the blog, we dont want to spend time on fixing stuff if we cause any prob to the server, and we dont have much time anyway.
